AMD and its treatments. Age-related macular degeneration or AMD is a degenerative disease of the retina. Representation of a section of the eye to locate the retina with a zoom on the healthy retina. Under the zoom, 2 boxes present the 2 forms of AMD: a first box on dry or atrophic AMD with a drusen (yellow) at which the pigment epithelium is atrophied, and photoreceptors destroyed. A second box on wet or exudative AMD with choroidal neovessels produces edema and detachment of the pigment epithelium and photoreceptor disruption. From this box is a choroidal vessel zoom in which are circulating VGF-A and PIGF isoforms that promote angiogenesis by attachment to the dedicated receptor at the vessel level. These fragile neo-vessels cause haemorrhages and infiltrations of the retina.
